SUSTEL is a two year research project on teleworking financed
by the European Commission's IST initiative. It involves collaboration
between seven partners - Avanzi (Italy), BT (UK), Danish Technological
Institute (DTI), Empirica (Germany), Telewerk Forum (Netherlands), University
of Bradford (UK) and the project coordinator, the UK Centre for Environment
and Economic Development (through its research unit, SustainIT). The project
commenced in January 2002 and aims to:
enhance understanding of the economic, environmental and social impacts
of teleworking
assess the extent to which the impacts of teleworking change over time
identify ways in these can be influenced by organizations and Governments
develop tools and guidance materials to enable organizations to evaluate
and optimize the sustainability of teleworking initiatives.
This will involve comparative research on organizations in Denmark, Germany,
Italy, the Netherlands and the UK. The work programme has five stages:
1. Conceptual framework (January-May 2002).
2. Field work (June-December 2002) - case studies of the sustainability
impacts of six organizations, plus a survey of teleworkers, in each
partner country.
3. Sustainability assessment tool (January-June 2003) - development
of on-line resources to help organizations to identify and evaluate
the key economic, environmental and social dimensions of teleworking.
4. Business guidance (July-December 2003) - advice on how to maximize
sustainability benefits in organizational teleworking schemes, with
examples of best practice.
5. Policy (July-December 2003) - implications of the project research
for European, national and local Government.
